Music Monday #14
This past week one of my favorite bands put up an acoustic version of my favorite song. They were my very first Music Monday, these guys from Minnesota, and I’ve mentioned them in passing at least one other time. More Like The Movies, made up of Mark Boe, Cole Kircher, Ryan Elke and two other mystery guys, are a fun alternative rock group from Minnesota. Catch their CD, It’s a Risqué Business, on iTunes and keep an eye out for their tour in the next few months.

*Sidenote: I’m sorry this is on Tuesday. Last night was the Beanpot. If you are a hockey fan from Boston, you know how big of a deal this is. Double that if you know anything about Boston University.
Advice Center #7
From Kat:
Hey Jillian! So I love singing and I’m working on learning guitar. I’ve never really wanted to major in music when I go to college, but do you think I should if I want to ever become a musician? I guess I think of music as a kind of side thing?
Hey Kat!
I think that if you think of music as a side project, then you shouldn’t major in it. Most colleges offer music classes that would allow you to minor in it, so you can keep singing and guitar in your life through college. The music industry is one of the hardest to break into, and sometimes just having a major in music doesn’t mean you’ll be able to record CDs or play shows. If you are interested in teaching, then you could become a music teacher with a teaching and music degree, but if that doesn’t interest you, then you would need to find something that you can support yourself with, and keep going with your passion. Here’s a scenario for you. You major in something that interests you that would allow you to get a good job out of college, and you minor in music or continue playing through college. You might be able to get a job in the music industry (I want to write for Rolling Stone), but if not then you have something to fall back on.
Saying that you think of music as just a side project is big, though. You don’t want to major in something that you really don’t want to major in. Keep your music as a side project and have fun with it, while going for something you really love and want to do in the future.
Good luck!
Celebrity of the Month: February
The first Celebrity of the Month for this year is going to someone who has really made her mark on the music industry this year. With an incredible number of hits since she hit the scene and more to come, she is truly an incredible woman and artist.
Lady Gaga
Gaga, born Stephanie Germanotta, is a singer/songwriter and performer at heart. With hits from her debut album Fame like “Poker Face,” “Papa Razzi,” “Just Dance,” and Bad Romance,” Gaga is a force to be reckoned with. She received a number of Grammy nods, taking home Best Dance Recording and Best Electronic/Dance Album. Not bad for her first year on the scene.
Her performances, however, are what Gaga is best known for. She always shows up to shows wearing bizarre costumes and giving even more bizarre performances. Who can forget when she “bled” on the stage at the VMAs or when she wore a Kermit the Frog inspired ensemble during an interview? Some find her antics to be a bit too crazy, but don’t tell that to her fans – or her “little monsters” as she fondly refers to them.
I, for one, love to see what Gaga will come up with next, whether it be playing a piano that is on fire or collaborating with Elton John, someone who some may argue was just like Gaga in his heyday (and still may be like Gaga) because of his more eccentric qualities.
No one can deny this, though: Gaga is a huge influence on today’s pop culture from her music to fashion, and she is beyond talented (don’t believe me? search Old School Lady Gaga on Youtube.)

Music Monday #13
Lucky number 13. Want to know who was lucky last night? Taylor Swift. Her lucky number is 13.
Just sayin’.
This week’s Music Monday is someone you have probably never heard of. She’s an 18 year old from New Hampshire who I met at the Honor Society concert last week. She is a really sweet girl who loves music and has sung for Honor Society, giving them and Timbaland a demo CD. Not only did she give Timbaland her demo, but he told her that he had heard of her and people were talking to him about working with her.
Not bad for a college student at UNH, where she has sung the National Anthem at their basketball game against Boston University.
Her name is Samantha Cunic and she’s going to be big. She’s learning to play guitar so that she can start writing her own music just as today’s most famous singer/songwriters (like Taylor Swift) do. She has nine songs up on her myspace right now, including a cover of “See U In The Dark” by Honor Society.
Samantha is a super nice, super cool girl who is beyond talented, and I’m so lucky to share a love for the same musical artists as her (Honor Society, Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, Carrie Underwood).

P.S. The Celebrity of the Month will be posted tomorrow.
Grammy’s 2010
It’s that time of year again.. the Grammy’s! I love awards shows. Beyoncé is up for 10 nominations, with Taylor Swift right behind her with 8. I’m hoping for good things for Taylor (of course) and I can’t wait to see how it all turns out. The show starts in 15 minutes, and I’ll be posting updates with what I think of the performances and the winners.
Lady Gaga is opening up this shindig. Won’t lie, I’m totally excited to see what she comes up with in this performance. AHH! She’s playing with Elton John. ELTON. JOHN.
(Video thanks to youtube user ga10210)
Colbert is here. He is so funny. I love the digs at everyone: Adam Lambert, the Jonas Brothers. Very nice. Whoa, Susan Boyle joke. Funny, somewhat iffy. More funny than iffy. He’s presenting Song of the Year, with an iPad.
Song of the Year winner: “Single Ladies” by Beyoncé
Beyoncé can’t accept because she’s going to be performing soon, so the writers are up there.
Right now we have a performance of Green Day’s “21 Guns” by the cast of the Broadway show based on their album, American Idiot. Now the boys have taken over the song. I really want to see this show if it comes near me.
Josh Duhamel and Kristen Bell are here to announce the winner for Best Country Album.
Best Country Album winner: Taylor Swift’s Fearless
Beyoncé’s performance now! She is so fierce. She’s performing “If I Were A Boy.” I was hoping for a medley, maybe some “Halo” or “Single Ladies.” Ahh.. We’re getting a cover of Alanis Morisette’s “You Oughta Know.” Very cool. Love this version. Beyoncé is so talented.
Seal is here to announce the next performance, Pink. Her outfit to start is very.. Mother Mary-ish. If Mother Mary were a glam rockstar. This is not very entertaining. I have seen better performances by Pink. She looks like she’s wrapped in string and hanging by a blanket and dripping in water.
Oh right, that’s because she is.
Keith Urban and and some blonde country artist that is not Taylor announced a few Lifetime Achievement Awards, and they’re now announcing the winner of Best New Artist.
Best New Artist winner: Zac Brown Band
I’m down with this winner. I think they’re really talented.
Miley Cyrus is here to announce the Black Eyed Peas performance. First up, “Ima Be” and now “I Got A Feeling.” Um, they’re awful live. They don’t sing songs that can be sung live. They sing dance songs and do crazy things to their voice in the studio.
The Jonas Brothers are here to present the performance by Lady Antebellum. They’re pretty good. I should give them a more serious listen at some point.
Kaley Cuoco is here with one of the Latin award winners. They are announcing Best Comedy Album.
Best Comedy Album winner: Stephen Colbert!
I love Colbert. He is so funny. Check out the Winter Olympics. He owns the speed skating team. He is now cool, according to his daughter. Go Colbert!
Nora Jones and Ringo Starr are announcing another Lifetime Achievement Award. The winner for Record of the Year is being announced.
Record of the Year winner: Use Somebody by Kings of Leon
I do love the Kings of Leon. They’re really incredible. I think the lead singer sounds like Roger from Rent.
Robert Downey Jr. is here to announce Jamie Foxx’s performance of “Blame it on the Alcohol.” Very funny introduction. Downey introduced them as an opera performance to improve the show and make it less gauche. And then Foxx is out there singing (read: lip synching). Slash is now performing with Foxx and T-Pain. You never know what you’ll see at the Grammy’s.
Ke$ha and Justin Bieber are here. Ke$ha looks like a hot mess. She’s a million feet taller than Bieber.
Katy Perry and Alice Cooper are here for another Lifetime Achievement Award and to announce Best Rock Album.
Best Rock Album winner: Green Day’s 21 Guns
General reaction from the people in my room: Whoa. We all thought that they had no chance against U2, AC/DC, Eric Clapton and U2. But wow. Congratulations to the underdogs tonight. (I consider Kings of Leon underdogs, especially since they’re up against Gaga, Beyoncé and Taylor.)
Chris O’Donnell is here to announce another random award no one is watching this for. He also announced Zac Brown Band’s performance.
Ryan Seacrest is here to announce Taylor Swift’s performance. She is singing her new song, “Today Was a Fairytale” in the new movie Valentine’s Day. Now she’s singing with Stevie Nicks! She’s performing a very.. different version of “You Belong With Me.” This is all about the music and singing with a hero than about the performance. I love it. (I also think Taylor can do no wrong.)
Lionel Richie is here to announce the Michael Jackson Tribute. Usher, Smokey Robinson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Celine Dion. I saw This Is It. Amazing movie.
Michael Jackson would have hated for his children to be at the Grammy’s. Good for them, though. Very well-spoken children.
Sheryl Crow is announcing Bon Jovi’s performance. The fan voted performance is Livin’ On A Prayer. No surprise there. The room is happy.
Best Rap Collaboration winner: Run This Town by Jay-z, Rihanna and Kanye West
Wyclef Jean announced the Haiti performance. Want to help Haiti? Text Haiti to 90999 to donate $10.
Adam Sandler is here! Yay! I love him and the Hanukkah Song. He is announcing the Dave Matthews Band performance. My friend Rob loves Dave Matthews Band. My friend Rob is a bro.
Lea Michele and Ricky Martin are announcing Best Female Vocal Performance.
Best Female Vocal Performance winner: Halo by Beyoncé
Yesss. Her vocals are amazing.
Maxwell is performing. He was up for a nomination, but I had no idea who he was. I still don’t.
In Memoriam time. This is always so sad. The last “In Memoriam” was Les Paul. Now they’re doing a tribute to him.
Quentin Tarantino is announcing the performance by Drake, Eminem and Lil Wayne. Drake’s name is Aubrey Graham. I will refer to him as Aubrey Graham, or as Jimmy, the kid in the wheelchair on Degrassi.
John Legend and Carlos Santana are announcing the award for Album of the Year.
Album of the Year winner: Taylor Swift’s Fearless
I am crying. I am so happy. Let’s end this on a happy note.
Advice Center #6
I really want to start doing things with music/music theater around where I live, not limited to my school shows. The catch is that most programs are expensive and take up a lot of time, so my parents don’t seem to thrilled about letting me do them. Any ideas as to how I can approach them so they’ll say yes?
I’m a big believer in obtaining your parents trust and keeping it. Once you have that, you are golden. You need to show your parents that you are serious about getting involved with music and theater. Take the initiative to look up a number of different programs, outlining the pros and cons of each. Think of what your parents would want to know and have the answers to their questions before they can ask. If you are upfront about what you want to do and how much things cost, it’ll be easier to look at the big picture and make a decision. You need to find out why exactly your parents aren’t crazy about the idea. Is it money? Time? Distance? Find out what the problem is and find the solution. The less work they have to do, the more willing they’ll be to listen, especially since it means that you are working hard for something you want.
Be persistent and sell them the idea. If you believe in yourself, and you can get others to believe in you, too, you can do anything. So, to sum it up: 1) do your research, 2) answer the questions before they can be asked, 3) find solutions to the problems and 4) believe that you can do this.
Let me know how it all works out!
Music Monday Special Edition Part Five
This will be the last “special edition” for awhile. Well, until Honor Society announces the dates for the Here Comes Trouble Tour and my Taylor Swift show in June. So, without further ado, Music Monday Special Edition Part Five.
Timbaland. I was going to see Timbaland. I need my head checked. This was a tough call for me to make. I didn’t want to see Timbaland, but I did want to see/meet Honor Society. So, I put on my big girl pants and I bought tickets for Kara, Laura and I. (Please note that Laura did not attend. She ended up getting food poisoning and was unable to make it.)
Kara and I got to the show at about 6:30. Doors opened at 7. We were very close to the front, but when I saw Catherine, she explained that the House of Blues has a pass the line program where you buy 20 bucks of stuff from their store and you get to skip to the front of the line. I figured that I could spare 15 more bucks, especially since I wasn’t going to do coat check and I saved all the fees by buying the tickets at the Orpheum instead of online. So, I bought myself a sweet magnet that says “Be Nice Or Leave – Thanks” and a bracelet.
So, I jumped the line, which was all Honor Society fans and a couple Timbaland fans. Apparently, adults don’t go to concerts hours early to make sure they get to be in the front. They also don’t spend 15 dollars to make sure they are in the front. Go figure. We were finally allowed in and I was in second row, right behind Catherine “I’m-a-million-feet-tall” Powers. I was able to see, though, so no worries. I was just to her side so I had a great, front-rowish view.
So, we’re all in the front, and the Timbaland fans start filing in. Wonderful. Finally, it is showtime. Honor Society was the opener, so they only had time for about six songs. They started out with “Full Moon Crazy,” then “Two Rebels” and “Over You.” They covered Jay Sean’s “Down” and then went into “My Own Way.” They closed with “Nobody Has To Know” and “Here Comes Trouble.”
They. Were. Incredible. Seriously. I was so impressed with the show. After they finished, I stayed for a bit of the next opener, Sebastian. After about ten more minutes, I needed to go sit down. My feet were taped up from physical therapy that morning and I was in so much pain I could have cried. Kara and I moved our way to the back and let the Timbaland fans move in, since God knows they wanted to be there for him more than I did. Why take a good spot from a real fan?
Kara and I went into the back to use the ladies’ room and get a drink while Timbaland played. I guess he was like a DJ. His performance was boring. I knew a lot of the songs, and the screen on the side of the stage playing videos of the people he collaborated with was cool. I was surprised that I was enjoying the music. However, my feet were in so much pain it was hard for me to enjoy much else.
We went over to the merch table, quickly, too. While I was there I got a picture with some guy who was on the stage at some point. While I waited over by the bar (after getting my free pen – Thanks, Da Real Sebastian) I saw the hot roadie that works for Honor Society and Ned (their manager) walked by.
Timbaland went over his time, and I was about to go crazy waiting for the boys. Kara and I moved from the bar to the sound booth, where we saw a Honor Society setlist. I asked the guy for it, and he gave it to me.
So, I met up with Catherine and Kay again, and we dealt with some drama that Kay was dragged into. We waited for Timbaland to hurry up and finish on the side where the meet and greet would be after the show. Up in the wings of the stage were the boys sitting and watching. I wonder if they enjoyed it more than I did.
Likely.
Finally the show ended. Kay and Catherine were first in line since they had to get home a.s.a.p. Kara and I hung back and chatted with other fans. I found out Scott Brown won the senate election (I’ll keep the politics out of this). Finally we got into line for real and got to meet the boys. I met Michael first. I thanked him for making music and keeping me sane while some crappy family stuff has been going on. I got a big hug and some really encouraging words. He promise that it would get better. Next was Jason. I said the same to him and he gave me a big hug. He told me that he liked my shirt (I borrowed my roommate, Anna’s shirt. It said Power to the Peaceful). I told Jason that I was “obsessed with peace and peace signs” (true) and that I wanted “to get a small tattoo of a peace sign at some point.” He said that was really cool and high-fived me. Alex said that my idea was awesome, and I said, “My dad would disown me, though.” Alex responded with, “My mom said the same to me.” I then told Alex thanks, much like I told Michael and Jason. Alex gave me a big hug. At this point, Kara had already finished getting her CD signed and Andy was listening to my conversation with Alex, so he got up to give me a big hug.
The guys were sweet, as usual, and made me feel 100x better. Well, my feet still killed and I wanted to pass out from the pain, but on the inside I was better.
We continued to hang back and chat with Catherine before she left. Then I introduced myself to Kat, who is on tour with the boys. She said that she loved my shirt and she had it, too. I admitted that it was Anna’s and not mine, but I wanted to keep it. Kat is a really sweet girl, and I can’t wait to see her the next time the boys are in Boston. Andy promised me that they would stop back in Boston on the tour.
Security finally kicked us out, and I told someone that I recognized her awkwardly, and she recognized me. Turns out she went to the same summer camp as my roommate. Oh, and she has been to all the same concerts as me.
Anyway. Kara and I walked back after that and I wanted to die when I ripped the tape off my feet. And I had a giant blister from it.
Totally worth it.
For two videos, check out YOUTUBE. For more pictures, go HERE.
Next week’s Music Monday will be a feature on a girl I met at the show. She’s an aspiring singer and student in New Hampshire. I hope really great things come to her. She met Timbaland and he had heard about her. People want him to work with her. And there’s the preview for next week.
Advice Center #5
Hey,
I really like a guy who has a steady girlfriend. Any advice?
This is a really hard situation to be in. We’ve all been there. We like a really great guy, and it turns out the really great guy is taken by someone that is not us. My advice for you is not to pursue this guy as anything more than a friend. You don’t want to be the reason he and his girlfriend break up. That would probably only create hard feelings towards you, which is not a good way to start a relationship. Keep your relationship as strictly platonic. If he and his girlfriend break up one day, and you’re still friends with him (and still like him) then you can give it a shot. In the meantime, keep the drama away. Drama will make it so you never have him.
Good luck!
Music Monday Special Edition Part Four
It’s time for my recap of the Nick Jonas and the Administration tour with Diane Birch. Next week will be part five of my special editions, as I’m going to see Honor Society and Timbaland tomorrow night. I know, I know. I go to too many concerts. It’s okay, my roommate goes to too many hockey/baseball games.
We begin with the first show on January 12. I arrived at about six, doors opened 45 minutes later. I jumped in the front of the line with Catherine, who had been there for hours, kid. Seriously. We waited and hung out, chatted with the girls around us and whatnot, and we were let in on time since it was so cold. The Orpheum is certainly efficient. I went to my seat: section orchestra right center row C (second row). I couldn’t see the drummer, though, which is a bummer since he’s wicked cool.
At about 7 I went to the merch table and met up with Amelia, Sarah and Catherine for a photo of us with our Who I Am posters. I also met with one of my brother’s friends briefly since she was there. After the show I met up with my friend Laura (who I go to EVERY show with) and this kid I graduated with. I also awkwardly saw Taylor on the T post-show. Haha!
The mom next to me was less than happy. She just hated the screaming coming from the two obnoxious girls to my right (Yo, girls. We all know that you weren’t in your correct seats). Papa Jonas sat in the soundbooth five seats and an aisle over from me with Maya. He kept air-guitaring and singing along. Very cute.
Diane is really talented. She did a lot of sitting and playing the piano and not a whole lot of performing, which made for a boring first half of the show. Laura and I texted back and forth a lot. Laura really wanted Nick to come on, she was over Diane really quickly. I think she needs a keyboardist so she can get up and sing and interact more. She can play piano other times during the show. It would make for more entertainment.
Her guitarist, Alex, was hot, though.
There was a short break, then Nick came on. Initially, I wasn’t sure he could pull off the frontman thing. He seemed stiff and awkward at the Grammy Nominations, but he really has improved. That boy has come out of his shell. He does a lot of “Yes, I know that I’m gorgeous” and smirking at the audience. I love it.
I can’t remember much of what he played because I don’t know song names, but I remember him playing “Rose Garden,” “State of Emergency,” “Conspiracy Theory,” “Olive and an Arrow,” “Vesper’s Goodbye,” “Last Time Around” and “Stronger.” He also sang Jonas songs like “Tonight,” “When You Look Me In The Eyes,” “Inseparable,” and “Black Keys/A Little Bit Longer.” He covered Owl City’s “Fireflies” and Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.” He did a medley of Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” and Demi Lovato’s “Catch Me” and his duet with Miley, “Before The Storm.” During his combo of ALBL and “Black Keys” he gave a speech about how 2010 will be the year of no fear, and how he thanks his fans for believing in him. Cute.
He also sang “Stay.” That song is a baby-making song. It’s soulful, passionate, and sexy as all hell. That song will be he end of me, I swear. It’s so calculated the way he plays it. Shirt starts off on, and ends up on the floor. Yum.
Encore was “Who I Am.” Definitely the crowd-pleaser along with “Stay.”
Nick was surprisingly funny during the show. He read a joke from the book, warning us that it and he weren’t very funny, but to laugh anyway. “What kind of car does Dracula drive? A Blood Mobile!” Crickets chirp. Some fake laughs were heard. He threw the book to the side and called it useless. No kidding. He started talking to and about the fans. He said that he could see us all in the crowd and did a girl voice. He explained that he invites friends to his show, and he asks them if they liked it afterwards. They tell him they had fun and he said, “Oh yeah, well I could see you standing like this,” and then he posed and pretended to be bored with his arms across his chest.
Direct quote: “You guys are giving New York a run for their money.”
No big deal. New York is inferior to Boston.
Second show on January 13 was just as, if not more, incredible. I got there at about 6 again and waited in line with Laura and Alexa. I also made sure to see Sandy, Catherine, Kay, Hannah. I also met Rachel. It was so good to meet them. We went in fairly on time. I saw the girls from the Honor Society show that live near my cousins, they were in front of us in line. While in line, we were allowed inside briefly to purchase merchandise. I got the red baseball tee. Love it. I pre-ordered the CD the night before.
I went inside with Kara and got to my seat. It was in the center Balcony, row G. I was about five rows back, not including mezzanine. Surprisingly good visuals, but the sound didn’t travel well up to us. Sandy was sitting near me, and Brittany Nicole was next to Kara. I couldn’t see very well, though, because the girl in front of me was very tall. I moved back a row, and I could see better.
Again, Diane was less than exciting. Travis from We The Kings came out to sing with her, which was really random, but really wonderful. He’s incredible. Unfortunately, it was a repeat of the night before in all other aspects. We were ready for Nick very quickly.
Nick came out and sang all the same songs except he did NOT sing “Vesper’s Goodbye” or “When You Look Me In The Eyes.” He replaced that one with “Hello Beautiful” and added “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. He also covered Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” and Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.” Yes, Nick. You really turned me on.
He skipped the jokes this time, instead opting for Nick Jonas trivia. We knew his birthday and favorite color (September 16, Blue) but not his wireless plan. I knew it was Verizon, since I have Verizon and it rocks. He decided that since not everyone knew, he won the game. He didn’t win.
I did.
After the show I met up with my friend Laura C. and Jamie. We walked back to the train with them. The band was in a white creeper van on the way back to wherever they were staying, and the girls ATTACKED the bus. It was extremely frightening. Crazy girls. Jeez. I was worried someone was going to get hit.
Anyway. Two awesome shows. Two different shows. I’m glad I went two nights in a row.
The videos I took can be found on my YOUTUBE. Enjoy!
Music Monday #12
I woke up this morning at 6:30 after going to bed at 1 in the morning. I had my blood drawn, my knee checked out and my teeth cleaned. I went shopping and I’m about to fall asleep. What that basically means, is that I am beyond exhausted and really don’t have the energy to sit down and type too much about this week’s Music Monday. I will either give a more in depth review of this person when I see her life this week, or I will edit this Wednesday or Thursday when I have a free minute (school starts back up this week).
Anyway, this week’s Music Monday is Diane Birch!

You probably know her because she is touring with Nick Jonas and the Administration this month. She released her album, Bible Belt, this year. This young artist has a number of influences in her music, despite how young she is. Diane has traveled the world since a young age which gives her an interesting point of view and style, that is reflected in her music.
Plus, Nick Jonas likes her, and that boy knows music.
